MATH
At Russell Street School we use the Everyday Math Program to guide our students to high level mathematical thinking. We try our best to use all of the resources we are given with this incredible program and we too would like to encourage you and your child to take advantage of all it has to offer as well. Attached below is the program's website; which your student has full access too at home. If you have any questions or are having trouble logging in please send me an email. Thank you :)

Place value
Students have been working on place value this week. To help them refresh this concept have them play some of the games below.
I made a slide presentation in Google Documents that I thought students could use to practice their math vocabulary. As of right now I only have vocabulary made up from Chapter 1: Geometry. I will attach the document to the right of this (it can only be presented in a PDF format), but I can send it to you by email upon request if you are interested in downloading it on a Google Drive App on your ipad/iphone for your child to study and keep up with important math vocabulary.

Elapsed time
What is elapsed time? Elapsed time is the difference between the starting time and ending time.
To the left is a photo demonstrating the strategy students will be working on to solve these types of problems. To help enhance your child's understanding of solving elapsed time problems it would be nice to have some consistency of problem solving at home and in school. You can use this photo to the left and the strategy we are modeling in the classroom when helping your child with his/her math work. |
Working with Decimals
This year in math students are expected to how to add and subtract with decimals. They should be able to locate and place a decimal on the number line down to the thousandths. To help your child become more successful with these concepts they can play some of the games below.

Partial Quotient Method of Division
Students are introduced to division using the partial quotient method of division. This is a different strategy from long division. For further explanation please clink the button to the left for a quick tutorial. Note that the first way the instructor demonstrates is long division, the second is the partial quotient method. |
